Aalto 2009

Ribera del Duero (Valladolid/Burgos), Spain

100% tempranillo

Tasted Feb2013- Outstandingly bold right from the pull of the cork! This is a complex and concentrated expression of Tempranillo (as Tinto Fino) that overwhelms the senses with euphoric fragrance of intensely ripe fruits. Think blue-black berries and figs painted across a charming vanilla backdrop (like a slice of freshly baked tart), and that is just the smell of this wine. On the palate, it is explosive, full of the same fruits tied into a black mineral earthen complexity. Plenty of oak heightens the sweet, ripeness (but we would not say this is sweet wine!). A velvety silken feel rolls around, a pillow of dense satisfaction with lurking tannins framing the edges. This tannin is so integrated (as is the spirited acidity) that the wine is deceptively structured but never too firm or too lazily soft. This is a mouthful of wine. A soothing sipper. A dense dance of flavors. And a well-constructed power house made to cellar if you can refrain from popping the cork too early (as we did!). As the pros have commented: "Elegant, very tasty and concentrated wine with an excellent, very bulky attack and a silky texture. It shows a long, very intense mid palate with notes of fleshy fruit wrapped in the creaminess provided by the aromas of sweet spices, bitter cocoa and fresh liquorice. It has nice noticeable tannins, a fresh and balanced acidity and a very long and persistent finish with very pleasant toasted aromas. A concentrated, complex and friendly wine. The pleasure of a great wine."

Additional Vineyard Information: The winery now controls 100 hectares of old vines with old clones of Tinto Fino, a very poor performance and exceptional quality, located in seven different municipalities of the PDO. This diversification provides us grapes of very different characteristics, able to provide an enormous amount of shades, which in turn is reflected in the balance and complexity of wines produced. Furthermore, Aalto has 42 hectares of land premium in three sub-regions of the PDO. Farms that we are carefully planting Tinto Fino clones selected by us among the most interesting of the Ribera del Duero.
