Mencia (joven) 2011

Ribeira Sacra (Galicia), Spain
www.adegaalgueira.com/index.php

100% mencia

Tasted May 2013- The first thing that hit the team was the stark crackling of the acids in this wine. We could almost smell the freshness about to happen, the bite it would have at impact but wonderous fruit substance poured through to soften the blow. Deep black currants, blueberry sweet-tart, red cherries and fresh figs alluring filled the palate, equally tender as it was tense. Melding into this was the bitter satisfaction not unlike charred sweet peppers that challenged the opulence. And a aromatized herb, close to tarragon added its coloring to this purple tasting fruit. The super-fine tannin structure made this texture so agreeable, hidden until long into the finish, where a bit of graphite, black pepper and the medicinal tinge of grey stones/slate played out. All at once this Mencia, true to form, was round, soft, puckery and freshly weighted while immersed in ripeness. Superb!
