Saumur Champigny 2012

100% cabernet franc

Tasted August2013- The first word that was spoken after the tasting was a collective smile. Simply that. Because this wine is a marvelous expression of feel, flavor and lingering complexity. It makes the drinker want to search through the layers to see what else is evident. For starters, the nose had a fun dance between deep purple floral scents and a snappy green herb. Where some Cab Franc can be called "bell-pepper like", this would glance in that direction and then leap away into ripeness. Red and black berries swirl forth without too much insistence. This is delightfully aromatic. On the palate the mix of red-to-black played out again. With a cool and even temperament, a gorgeous saturation of plush fruit carried hints of smoke, mineral and turn of the pepper mill. There was a well intended concentration and warming richness. At the same time, the acid danced too, complimenting with bitter hints and keeping the weight spritely and elegant. The finish resolved with quiet power, equally bright as it was saturated, umami breadth mixed with a light dusty tannin. The beauty was in the dance here, everything moving effortlessly, sometimes electric and often soothing, so that the conversation continued as we sipped. More words could be said, but I think our smiles were the loudest heard. Thierry is as much a poet as winemaker and perhaps we should defer to his words in the description," "The dress: It is delivered in a medium red / ruby, almost clear as it offers us. She is bright, bright. It is adorned with undulating reflections between the variegated purple and cherry. the nose: Beautiful nose of flowers and red berries. in the mouth: The attack is frank and straight. The fruit is slightly crushed and gives a lot of juice in which the dominant red but black is not absent. The acidity is present, it gives the magnitude, depth. Alcohol, he is at the service of all inducing verticality. The tannins Are Playing them on ambiguity: they are juveniles, many, slightly grainy, they are also fond and Affordable Matter is pending but has lots of charm and is affordable.. The finish is medium long and plays with bergamot and jasmine records." Wow. time to try this!
